6 :: first

Advance or retreat? It is auspicious for the soldier to use divination.

Use divination in your strategy. You (foot soldier) need to make an alliance with a greater power (officers, ancestors, Heaven). Success relies on divining the wisdom of your superiors.

9 :: second

Secrecy.¹ Yong Shi and Wu² in great numbers. Auspicious. No harm.

Use multiple sources of divination. In cross-referencing the advice of several, even many, occult advisors your path becomes clear for action without risk.

6 :: third

Excessive divination. Troubles ensue.

You are confused and anxious about the contradictory interpretations of omens. Your excessive use of divination is exacerbated by selfishness, anxiety, and insincerity. Your selfish obsession with personal success invites failure.

9 :: fourth

Obstructions abate. Three types of game³ are bagged.

Several clear divinations assist you in establishing, clarifying, and reaching your goals. Proper divination (bagging game) goes well. Your patience and compliance to omen begin to pay off.

9 :: fifth

Auspicious. Nothing obstructing. Contraindicated for a jia day. Best for a gui day.⁴

Everything is ready for success. What was at first obstructed and confused is now open and clear. Your conscientious and precise compliance to divined wisdom brings great success.

6 :: top

Making obeisance. Sacred ax is lost. Ill omen.

Egotism has ruined your chance for success. Carelessness, hypocrisy, and superficial compliance to wise counsel invite disaster. You lose an important oppor tunity by ignoring the indicators of divination.

Xun describes the good fortune found through compliance with the wisdom gained from proper divination (counsel). Calculation (divinatory technique) and compliance to the outcome is, in this case, the road to success. When we absorb and comply with the spiritual wisdom (wind) found in divination (the voice of the ancestors) success is easy.

Auspices

Favorable for success in small matters and/or taking the subordinate role. Good fortune relies on your compliance to divination, so failure to submit to wise omen brings disaster.

Good for divination, following orders, submission, and humility.

Bad for arrogance, travel, lawsuits, extravagance, haughtiness, and impulsiveness.

Comment

Xun is divined when it is important to simply let the mysterious unknowable penetrate and shape you. All we do-all we "accomplish"-is only successful when it parallels the larger, mysterious agenda of Heaven (ancestors). Therefore, it is sometimes best to simply comply with the advice of divination.

The Zhouyi does not suggest that compliance is universally required, like a covenant that requires the constant submission to the will of a god. In fact, the mysterious way of Heaven (ancestors) is often negotiable, cooperative, and even bribable at times. But when Xun is divined the message is simply to comply, not negotiate.

Other Correspondences

Business: Mergers, fengshui adjustments, using consultants, and a thorough auditing.

Disharmonies: Contagious diseases, injuries, venereal diseases, and heart failure.

Prognosis: Fair. The patient will recover if diagnosed early and complies with the physician's advice and treatment.
