6 :: first

It is favorable to plow fields and sow grain. Most auspicious.

Your ordinary hard work pays off. There are no obstacles to the simple law of cause and effect. If you plow and sow, you will reap and store.

9 :: second

Increase. The tortoise shells do not to oppose.¹ A ruler makes offerings to Di.² Auspicious.

You are irreversibly fated to succeed. Promotions and rewards are given to you even though you are in a subordinate position or early stages of a project. It is advised to remain humble and give the praise and credit to your mentors and predecessors.

6 :: third

Increase. Profit from disaster. No misfortune. Centered. Hold the jade tally.³

You honestly learn from a mistake and turn mishap into good fortune. When things go awry, you stay centered and are rewarded with honors and responsibilities.

9 :: fourth

Stay centered. A duke is in command. The capital city may be moved.

As a new leader, with brand new powers, you may make great changes. New leaders can change the very basis of power by removing the old leadership structure and/or relocating the center of operations (capital). A new dynasty is founded.

9 :: fifth

Sacrificial captives. No questions. It is most auspicious to be generous.

You express your good fortune with generosity. Having attained success, you feel it is unnecessary to question or punish those (captives) who opposed you. Magnanimity and forgiveness express true power.

6 :: top

No increase. Attacked for inconsistency. Disaster.

You lose power to a righteous critic. When leaders become luxury loving, inconsistent and/or self-indulgent, their opponents can find a sound and just basis for revolution.

Yi means to be benefited or to gain. It is a natural or inherited gain. The image is a vessel being filled to overflowing. Increase is predicated on being empty or in a lowly (empty, young) position. Continuous increase should be halted and/ or redirected before overflow becomes waste.

Auspices

Auspicious for almost everything. Dreams are realized and no task is too large. The situation is full steam ahead. Stay centered and generous to avoid overflow.

Good for marriage, travel, moving house, healing, and modesty.

Bad for hesitation, postponement, greed, and laziness.

Comment

Yi is about the natural progress of things when it is enhanced by the best of conditions. Sun and water and good soil help the tree grow strong; yet a tree is also subordinate to the warmth, the rain and soil. The tree also naturally "knows" what to take and leave. Yi is the "knowledge" of nature.

Again the Zhouyi says that ambition is often what spoils success, not what creates it. When natural growth and personal fate unite, we are advised to stay centered and welcome increase. Do not be distracted by the many "possibili-ties," stay with reality.

Business: New ventures and investments, issuing stocks, expansion, and new partnerships.

Disharmonies: Spleen deficiency, acne, and excess damp.

Prognosis: Very Good. The patient's recovery is imminent.
