Kui :: Incompatible

Auspicious for small matters

6 :: first
Troubles disappear. A lost horse returns by itself.
A disfigured man. No misfortune.
The negativity you are experiencing is short-lived. Experiencing loss and/or having a dream of misfortune are not causes to worry. Your troubles naturally rectify themselves in time.1
9 :: second
Meeting the master in a narrow lane. No misfortune.
You meet a benefactor at an inappropriate time and/or place (narrow lane). When seeking advice you cannot always follow protocol. In this case, the great person does not stand on ceremony and generously offers counsel.
6 :: third
Ox cart dragged backwards. Branding and mutilation2
A bad start; but not a bad end.
You get off on the wrong foot, but stop before being punished. A mistaken move is reversed (ox cart). Stopping in time, humiliation is avoided.
9 :: fourth
Incompatible. Isolated. Meeting a great man again. No mistakes.
Accept that you make no progress for now. This is not defeat. Self-reflection and/or the counsel of a wise person resolve your negative feelings and isola-tion. Difficulties and solitude are natural phases in the great cycles of life.
9 :: fifth
Troubles disappear. Offering meat and consulting with the ancestors.
Going forward. No mistakes.
By communicating (divining) openly and sincerely with your resources, obstacles to action are cleared. Feelings of isolation and powerlessness vanish when you open your heart to your true benefactors (ancestors). Put away childishness.
6 :: top
Incompatible. Isolated. Muddy-backed pigs. A Cart of Ghosts.3
Draw and slacken a bow. Not a robber but a bridegroom.
Going to meet. A rainy day. Auspicious.
What appears to be a hardened and ill-fated situation can be softened by accep-tance. Bad timing (inauspicious omens) exacerbates an already disagreeable situation. Despite this, your attitude of perseverance and authentic acceptance (bridegroom) brings release (rain).

Image

Kui is an omen of frustration and unrequited love. Two magnetic poles are longing to connect, but naturally repulse each other. Fire goes up. Water goes down. Things diverge. In an attempt to focus on something, our eyes strain and look off in opposite directions-creating a blur.

Auspices

Unfavorable for planning or forward progress. Expect to be frustrated but make small gains. It is a good time to seek counsel from those with expertise and wisdom.

Good for retreats, funerals, burials, divination, meditation, and study.
Bad for travel, romance, partnerships, family matters, marriage, and making your case.
Comment

Hexagram 38 is the opposite of 37. In 37 there is a natural fruition that comes from a group or family effort. In Kui the fruition of action is blocked by the loss of community support-individual isolation and incompatibility.

The hexagram is related to the perennial incompatibility of the constellations Ox-boy and Maiden4 in Chinese astrology. Like star-crossed lovers some things in life are irresolvable, but incompatibility need not produce painful longing.

In Kui frustration is noted as a natural phenomena. Frustrating situations, like the one depicted here, cannot be changed, but can be mitigated. Try a little self-reflection and humility.
