Lin :: Approach
Supreme offering: auspicious :: In the eighth moon1 misfortune
Lin is the name of an ancient "siege machine"2 and is about a fated opportunity to take over and replace the powers that be. Lin describes the rise, from the ranks, of a sincere person--a people's hero. Replacing a weak king, a lowly foot soldier advances to the top. Yang (new) is replacing yin (old) in a timely way. It is a revolution that is as natural as the return of Spring.
Lin also refers to the protocols for grieving at a funeral. As the old guard falls, it is important that the new leaders show them respect. This protocol of respect creates a smooth and dignified transference of power.
You must be patient and appropriate in your progress, but do not procrastinate. The auspice is for forward action.
History records many leaders rising from obscurity to power. Despite their humble beginnings they are simply fated to lead. Lin provides guidance for those in a lowly position who are on their way to the top. It is also about old habits inevitably giving way to new inspiration.
In the process of replacing stale leadership it is important not to become a bully or look down upon those you replace. When Lin is divined a person in a subordinate position (new inspiration) is shown the natural way to gain control of a weakening hierarchy (hardened concepts). It is the journey from simplicity to majesty.
