Qian :: Heaven

Supreme offering: favorable auspices

6 :: first
A dragon lies beneath the surface of a frozen lake. Do not act hastily.
You feel potential greatness but your inevitable success has not yet emerged. Be patient. The last vestiges of winter will soon succumb to the arrival of spring.
9 :: second
Observe a dragon in the field. It is auspicious to seek wise counsel.
Success is gathering force. Consult with experts and learn to direct and conserve your energy. The fresh and delicate hue of spring is emerging.
6 :: third
Be active and creative by day, cautious and careful at night.'
When yang prevails, practice going forward. When yin prevails, retire. Danger, in this situation, comes from mistakenly over-extending yourself, but this mistake is not inevitable. Progress is made in the light of day (yang) but not in the dark of night (yin).
9 :: fourth
An urge to leap out of the lake. No harm.
You act impulsively but no irreversible mistake is made. You are prepared and anxious to act, but hesitation is still best. The dragon of spring writhes below the surface of an alpine lake.
9 :: fifth
There is a dragon flying in the sky.1 It is auspicious to seek wise counsel.
You make excellent progress and reach the pinnacle of success. This was fated-inevitable. Consulting with experts refines and stabilizes your success. Observe the rainbow and listen to the thunder. Be like a dragon soaring up through the clouds of spring.
6 :: top
There are dragons beyond the sky. Regrets.
Yang is in excess. You are going beyond your limits without caution or sensitiv-ity. Lost in exuberance you will lose what you have gained. There will be regret.
Late summer is a time for exhausted yang to withdraw, not increase.

Image

Qian is Heaven, the Primordial Yang, represented by a dragon. It is the vital force that shows itself in the inevitable return of spring--the cycle of the sea-sons. A shaman invokes spring by making offerings to the celestial dragons that spent the winter in frozen alpine lakes. The stirring and then rising of the dragons brings rain and initiates the growth of crops. Qian is associated with cre-ativity, renewal, and initiation. It is also the constancy of our primordial father.

Auspices

Qian, the celestial creative force of the universe, is asserting itself. All activity is energized, strengthened, and expanding with dragon-like force. Success and profit comes to all things. Industry and production are both greatly benefited.

You can expect the unexpected.

Good for initiating action, renewed and continued progress of all kinds, travel, and marriage.
Bad for for impulsiveness, postponement, and equivocation.
Comment

Qian is the natural endless progress of time as symbolized by the onset of spring. Time is celestial movement, like the wind in the sky-not the product of human effort. The first hexagram is like the head of a circle; it is the beginning or renewal of a constant and endless cycle of time.

When you play in the sky like a dragon, among dragons, judicious timing (rather than a show of force) is appropriate. The key to the power of primordial yang is found in cautious preparation, conservation, and management of yin. If you are prepared for such yang force, you can use it and not lose it, and avoid being abused by it.
